I opened Independent Motors in 1983 after working as a Master Nissan Technician for a Denver dealer. I didn't like the way the employees and customers were treated, so I decided to do things differently. I immediately installed two lifts for each of my technicians so they would not have to wait around for parts. I offered group health and dental insurance to all employees along with matching IRAs. I made sure that our service writers were paid on salary instead of commission. That way they wouldn't have any incentive to sell customers unneeded repairs in order to increase their paychecks. In 1983 we were pioneers in offering employees such a complete benefit package. Many years ago I remember a young Boulder hippie with long hair, beard and shabby clothes came into the shop. He was trying to sign me up on a brand new program that he had helped put together. It was the original program that Public Service ( now Excel Energy ) used to generate electricity from wind power. I took a liking to him and his cause, and advised him how to clean up his act to better solicit business men and women. As a result of this meeting Independent Motors became the first business to sign up for wind power in Boulder.
